Ancient Salt Flats, Maya History & Local Life in Yucatán
his private tour takes you along the northern coast of Yucatán, from Progreso to the ancient salt flats of Xtampú, the quiet Maya site of Xcambó and the local village of Dzemul.
At Xtampú, we explore the salt flats and see how salt is still harvested manually from the lakes. During the right season, the water can turn a striking pink colour. You can also try grinding your own salt using an ancient-style tool, similar to those used by the Maya.
We then continue to Xcambó, a peaceful archaeological site surrounded by jungle where climbing some of the temples is still allowed.
The day finishes in Dzemul, where we spend time with a local family in their traditional Maya home, prepare a traditional meal together and learn more about everyday life in the community.
